TAKS Preparation Resource - Provided by Hereford Junior High

Study Island is a leading provider of web-based state assessment preparation programs and standards based learning programs and is used by over five million students in over 11,000 schools.

Hereford Junior High provides a subscription to Study Island for every student. The site is aligned to the course and has a lesson attached to each area studied.
THIS SITE IS NOT A GAME!
Each time a student takes a quiz on the site the score becomes part of his/her cumulative score so the site should be used in a studious manner. The U. S. History link is open.

The questions on the site are very similar in design to the questions that will be on the TAKS which all students will take in the spring. One of the greatest advantages of using the site is that it helps students experience what might be expected on the TAKS.

Each student knows their username and password and can access the site at any time from any computer that has internet access.

Study Island is a great resource for learning U. S. History. In addition it makes history fun!

HOMEWORK HELPS

Homework Assignment

Complete the Chapter 6 Study Guide

This week's homework assignment is designed to prepare for the 3-weeks test. Students are to complete the Study Guide by class on Friday. The test will be on Monday. All test questions will be taken directly from the Study Guide. We will also be covering the information in class this week.

Suggested Completion Schedule:

Monday - Items 1-14.

Tuesday - Items 15-27.

Wednesday - Items 28-42.

Thursday - Items 43-54.

Chapter 6 deals with the events of the American Revolution. The textbook is a great resource but some other interesting infromation may be found at these sites.

In class we have watched the Disney movie "Johnny Tremain". The movie is based on the book by Esther Forbes. In 1942 she published her first nonfiction work, a biography of Paul Revere entitled Paul Revere and the World He Lived In, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize.

While researching Paul Revere’s life, Forbes became increasingly interested in the colonial period, particularly in the Bostonians of the Revolutionary era. She decided to write a children’s book telling the story of a young Boston apprentice who witnesses America’s birth firsthand. This is how the book "Johnny Tremain" came to be. Many parents and grandparents read this book when in junior high. I would recommend that you get this book and read it with your children and then rent the movie and view it as a family as it presents historical content in a way that will not soon be forgetten.

Famous Quotes.
The American Revolution was a beginning, not a consummation. ~Woodrow Wilson

This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in. ~Theodore Roosevelt

Dear Parents and Students of U. S. History,

I would like to welcome you to this site on American History!
The blog is designed for 8th grade Middle School students in Texas who are studying American History to 1877.

Things will be added, periodically, to parallel our classroom studies. These additions may include help with homework, fun links, research resources and announcements of classroom and school events.

One thing that I stress in my classroom is that "history is about people". So there will be times that I will post pictures of events that are of "historic merit" in the lives of our students such as sporting events and awards.

I hope that you find this blog both educational and entertaining.

History Is Fun,
Mr. Bulin
